Chapter Eleven

Mia was flying. That had been better than getting any A, any extra credit. She and Ryder Brooks had sung a song together.

Not just a song, her song.

A song she wrote to make sense of her life had made sense to him, had touched him enough that he wanted to sing it, with her.

But underneath that, adrenaline’s twin, panic, was setting in. She felt exposed, and not in the way she thought she would where Ryder was concerned.

She needed to get her hands on his notebook. Get the balance of power back somehow. Unfortunately, it was still in his pants, and while she might have gotten up the courage to turn toward him last night, that was nowhere close to the courage she would need to reach into his underwear, even just for his notebook.

Why was she thinking about Ryder Brooks’s underwear?

She heard her phone ring from across the room.

Her instructions were to answer it whenever it rang, but in that moment she didn’t want to. She didn’t want to be the Mia her mother forced her to be. She wanted to be the Mia Ryder had just discovered.

Ry, it started. Oh no, it was from a girl. Maybe a real girlfriend? She shouldn’t have been reading it, but she couldn’t stop.

I know I’m not legally your mother anymore, but I feel like I should at least be compensated for the years I was. I am going to be evicted if you don’t help me out. Any good son would be willing to help his mother. Any son wouldn’t have abandoned his mother the way you did. I will always be your mother, no matter what lies you tell. You can’t get rid of me that easily. I am your blood. That used to mean something to you before you got all high and mighty. The least you could do is share some of what you have. All I did was give birth to you…

Mia stopped reading, her hand shaking so hard the paper almost ripped. She knew it wasn’t his notebook he had been hiding, it was this.

It was common knowledge that Ryder’s parents had both died when he was little and that he was an orphan. At least that was what the tabloids said, but this letter couldn’t exist if that was true. Beyond that, this letter didn’t read like a mother who had been
