138. Stackhouse alludes to some new, contemporary theories of civil society in his 2009 presidential address to the American Theological Society. (See Stackhouse, “Framing the Global Ethos,” 8.) While these theories can shed some light on his understanding of creative democracy and social theory of politics, they cannot carry the weight of his philosophy of history. They do not have the dialectics to shed light on the progress of history, of the dynamics of ecclesia. Stackhouse’s theory of the ecclesia, which we have explained so far, is in a certain sense a cross between what he calls “contemporary and older views” of civil society. So it is not out of place here to focus on part of the “combo” that elucidates on the dialectics of history since the focus of this essay is on his theology of history.
