THE FOLLOWING DAY YIELDED slightly less progress, since not as many people were available for the whole time. However, the ones that did show up managed to transport all of the materials from the Tube Station to Reclamation. And as far as Ripley was concerned, that was cause for celebration. When everyone had gone home for the night, Molly stayed behind and joined Ripley and Denton for their evening meal, pitiful though it was. Ripley had never claimed to be an excellent chef, and the rations, though adequate, lacked variety these days. Afterward, Ripley disappeared into the bedroom for a few moments and returned holding a bottle. Dentonâs eyes went wide.
âWhere did you get that?â he breathed, his expression greedy.
âFrom Terrance,â Ripley replied casually, pulling down the two glasses from the cupboard and looking around for something else to drink from. âHe gave it to me the last day that we visited Geothermal. Said it reminded him of home.â
Not finding another cup, he shrugged and grabbed a bowl. âThis will have to do.â He placed it in front of Denton and offered a glass to Molly. It was a mark of how desperately Denton wanted a taste of the bottleâs contents that he did not comment on being reduced to drinking from a bowl like an animal.
Ripley poured a small amount of the dark amber liquid for each of them before sitting. It didnât smell very good, but he didnât know much about liquor. Maybe that was just how it was supposed to smell. He thought about toasting sandwiches with Ben. âTo making a difference.â
He raised his glass. Molly joined him, but Denton just took the bowl in both hands and emptied it in one loud swallow. Ripley took a small sip of his own and grimaced. The sandwiches had been much nicer. Molly sputtered, coughing into her hand and setting her glass back down on the table, pushing it a little farther away than necessary.
âThatâs vile,â she managed apologetically before coughing again.
âIâm not much of a drinker,â Ripley admitted, âbut Terrance said it was the closest thing to what they offer in Culei.â
Molly raised an eyebrow. âWell, to each their own, I guess. But Iâm glad I donât live in Culei.â
Denton snatched the bottle in front of Ripley to pour himself another helping. âBeggars canât be choosers. I havenât been able to go to the tavern since they made me your babysitter.â
âWe could go sometime,â Ripley offered.
âYeah right, like I want to be seen hanging out with your sorry self in public.â
âYou could say it was my idea.â
âAnd have my friends thinking you just boss me around all day? No, thanks.â
Ripley shrugged. âHave it your way, then.â
He tried a few more sips, but the taste did not grow more pleasant with time, so he eventually gave up. Molly pushed her own glass all the way across the table to Denton, who took it without comment or thanks.
âIâm going to head home,â Molly said at last. âBut Iâll be back in the morning.
