Chapter Eleven

Jo’s heart stuttered. Alex looked so serious. The crooked grin was gone, as was the twinkle in his gray-blue eyes as he exchanged a meaningful look with Rich, who merely nodded before hurrying over the gangplank.

He waved as he stepped onto the dock. “I’m outta here. The critters have been fed; they’re up top, catching the last of the rays.”

“Where are you headed? Need a suggestion?” Jo offered as the heavenly scent of roasted chicken filled the air.

“Nope.” Rich paused. “Going to a tavern with your dad and grandpa.”

“Have fun.” Rich would enjoy Hutchins House, the local watering hole. Butch Carter’s family had owned the place for ages, having bought it from the original owner, Samuel Hutchins, back before the turn of the last century. The bar was full of history, and had great food and a pretty nice selection of beers.

She smiled at Alex, who still looked kind of somber. “Hey, this looks delicious. Which veggies did you chop?”

He laughed, lightening the atmosphere a bit. “I actually chopped all of them and put them on the skewers, which turns out is the extent of my culinary skills.” He nodded at the meal laid out before them. “The rest is all Rich and the bakery in town.” He picked up his phone, even though it hadn’t made as sound as far as she could tell, swiped the screen, and thumbed for a second.

Jo’s natural inquisitive nature was aroused. “Who are you texting?”

He turned the screen toward her, holding it away from the light so she could read it. It was an app—CADuo. “What’s CADuo?”

“It’s my story.” Alex set the phone facedown on the table. “Can I show you something?”

“Sure.”

“I have to lift my shirt, okay?”

Okay? Seriously? Sure, Alex, show me your ripped abs. I think I can handle that.

He half rose from his chair, then stood straight up when she merely nodded. Pulling the hem of the shirt up, he tugged the waistband of his shorts down enough to reveal the small flesh-colored bandage right above his hip bone that she’d noticed the day before. He tapped it lightly with one finger. “This is an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor all in one. It’s not new technology, but it is the smallest one built so far. Carlos and I invented it, and I’m the guinea pig.”

She stared at his tanned, firm belly for a moment. “You’re diabetic?”

He dropped his shirt and sat back down. “Since I was twelve.” He held up the phone again. “I can titrate insulin with this app or let it release insulin automatically. Depends on the reading the meter gets. It checks my blood sugar pretty much every few minutes and releases insulin as I need it. This week, we’re experimenting with the manual release, making sure the app functions properly. That’s why I always have my phone on me.”

Jo blinked, picked up her fork, then set it back down. “That’s what you were doing at Mac’s? Giving yourself insulin before we ate?”

He nodded.
