Chapter 19

Rod

She smelled fresh, like lilacs on a spring morning. I always wanted to breathe deeper when she was close to me. Or maybe it was just that the closer she got the heavier I breathed.

“Nice view,” I said, looking down the front of the sundress she’d worn today. I ran a finger along the neckline that exposed the swell of her breast.

“You know, boss . . . this might be considered sexual harassment,” she said, moving away.

I followed her around the desk to where she was leaning over to toss the napkins in the wastebasket. “Are you feeling harassed?” I asked and pulled her against me, kissing the side of her neck as she straightened.

She turned in my arms so she was looking up at me. “I’m not sure yet. Are you feeling sexual?”

Pressing her against the desk, I fit my body tighter to hers. “Do you think I feel sexual?”

“Mmmm . I think you feel sexy.” A smile crossed her lips as she reached up to kiss me. A rush of heat swept over me as she slid her leg up alongside my hip. Breaking the kiss, I looked down at her. She was beautiful, dark curls falling around her face, her green eyes twinkling and her face flushed. She looked at me and just shook her head and smiled. In that instant I realized she was the cliff the fool walked along side. I knew I’d gladly toss myself over the edge for her any day. She hooked her leg behind me and pulled me back against her. Yup, headed for the edge.

Janine

Rod watched as I slipped my dress back into place. “Does this mean you’re not mad at me anymore?” he asked.

“No.”

“Well, that sure felt un-mad to me.” He straightened the strap of my dress and pulled me against him.

I smiled. “That doesn’t mean I’m not still mad,” I said, giving him a shove. I looked around and spotted one of my sandals under the desk. “It’s just that some parts of me are less mad than others.” I bent to retrieve it, then got on my hands and knees and felt around for the other one.

“Jeez, Janine . ” I knew he was watching my ass wiggle around. “C’mon . I said I was sorry.”

“You sure are— sorry, that is,” I said as I stood up and shook a sandal at him. “You follow me around, spy on me—like I’m one of your cheating spouse cases. You trample my roses, total my trellis, scare the hell out of me, fall off the roof, get into a fight with Sam—and then try to blame it on the poor dog?”

“Hey! It was his idea!” he said, then mumbled, “Well most of it anyway.”

“Don’t even go there,” I said, slipping on my sandals. “The poor thing was wet and shivering and scared to death when he came in the house.”

“Poor thing my ass! Next time he can climb the trellis and I’ll pretend to be innocent.”

“Hey,” I said, “there’d better not be a next time.
