Chapter Eleven
Matthew turned to face Esther the moment Mrs. Eastlake was taken away in the ambulance. Her distress was clear almost immediately.
She had endured far more than anyone should have to suffer at work. For him, it was his job, and they paid him handsomely for it. Esther was a completely different story.
He moved to her side and put an arm around her. Esther glanced up at him, but said nothing. He could feel her shaking. âTell me whatâs wrong,â he said, then pulled her into his arms.
Esther glanced about. They were in public and he was holding her in a way he had no right to do. Instead of pushing him away as he thought she might, she rested her head against his chest.
âIâm afraid to go back and work with Henry,â she said so quietly he could barely hear her.
Matthew held her at armâs length. âYou wonât be doing that, I can assure you.â He hadnât told her what heâd planned and then carried out, but perhaps he should have. âI have laid charges against Henry. The marshals are on the train interviewing him now, and they will want to interview you as well.â He brushed Estherâs hair back off her face. âThey will take Mrs. Eastlakeâs statement when she is well enough to provide one. We can only hope the weasel will be in jail during our trip back to Timberlake Junction.â
He felt Estherâs relief as she sighed against him. Matthew rubbed his hands across her back, the movement soothing to him. He only hoped it did the same for her. âThank you,â she whispered. âThe man is a danger to anyone he comes in contact with.â
Matthew knew it was complicated. They had a two-day stopover in Helena while the train was cleaned and readied for the return trip. Their rooms were booked, and their luggage would have already been delivered on their behalf. âWe will stay at the Travelers End Hotel. Itâs comfortable and clean. We always stay there.â
âI feel better knowing youâll be there, too. What about Henry?â Estherâs face was a testament to her anguish, and Matthew felt bad for her.
âThere is every possibility the weasel will have accommodations of a different kind.â He took great pleasure in knowing that dreadful man would be locked away in a cold jail cell in Helena. That way, he could cause no more harm.
Esther glanced up at him, her relief clear. âI never thought Iâd think this way, but Iâm truly glad. After what he did to me, I am afraid for my safety.â
Matthew continued to embrace Esther for a few more minutes, and enjoyed every moment. Despite knowing he shouldnât.
âDo you know who I am?â the familiar voice shouted at the two marshals who accompanied him. âMy uncle will have your jobs for this.â Henry continued to cause a scene as they dragged him in handcuffs from the train. Matthew refrained from showing his pleasure at what was going on. It was well past time Henry Boswick was made accountable for his actions.
