Chapter Nine
Lilah pouted for a few days, pounded her punching bag even more and cursed her ex-husband and Ashe and every man sheâd ever wanted but been unable to have. She also watched Eleanor and her friends like a hawk, trying to figure out if they really were sorry about what theyâd done or gone back to their old, meddling ways. Sheâd confronted them after Ashe left, and theyâd sworn theyâd stop trying to get him to help ease her back into post-divorce sex, but Lilah was still worried.
By the time she had lunch in town with the owner of the lingerie shop, she was ready for some advice, some womanly advice that didnât come from someone who was eighty-something and had asked Ashe to please have pity sex with her.
Just for spite, she asked Sybil, the shop owner, to meet her at the little lunch spot around the corner from the courthouse where sheâd had lunch with Ashe. And if he happened to be there, so be it. She could at least try to look good, maybe even sexy, maybe even very sexy and desirable, and make him regret all his silly rules.
Sybil looked like a French seductress, clad in a simple black dress that clung to all her curves, accented with one of those perfectly placed French scarves that Parisian women wore like works of art in the kind of casual knot Lilah could never manage. Heads turned when they walked in.
âWe seem to be drawing quite a bit of attention,â Lilah said, wondering if people were looking at her or Sybil or both of them.
âThe room is full of some of my best customers,â Sybil whispered. âDonât let the somber suits fool you.â
âYou donât mean that some of the men are wearing womenâs under things beneath their suits, do you?â Lilah said.
Sybil gave a full-throated, sexy laugh. âWell, not too many of them, I suspect. I mean, statistically, itâs likely that at least a few of them are, but I canât be sure about anyone in particular. I was talking about them purchasing lingerie for their wives and girlfriends.â
âOh, thank goodness,â Lilah said.
âIâm so glad you called me,â Sybil said. âOur businesses naturally complement one another. We both help women get on with their lives after being dumped by a man, or dumping a man themselves.â
âI mentioned your idea about a field trip to your store to the ladies in my classes, and theyâre very excited. A little apprehensive, but excited.â
Sybil smiled. âI was thinking weâd pick a time when the shop is normally closed, and open up just for you and your clients. Iâll have some champagne on ice, some chocolates, show the ladies some of our newest and most popular items, and then they can try things on and help each other pick out some beautiful things.â
âThat sounds like a fun evening,â Lilah said. âWe can all use a fun evening.â
âSpeaking of which, how did your gentleman like the item I helped you pick out?â Sybil said.
