In the past, I’ve hauled my studio lights to the hotel meeting rooms for these sessions. This meant schlepping gear cases containing power packs, flash heads, flash cables, power cables (including a variety of extension cords), big softboxes, and the like. In addition to the bulk and weight, it took a lot longer to set up this rig than to set up remote speedlights. Therefore, this year’s portraits were taken with three Quantum Qflashes and portable light modifiers. The setup time was half as long as in the past, and the quality of the images was still outstanding.

Image 5-29 shows the setup in the reception room. A FourSquare softbox was the main light, placed to camera right. It had a Quantum Trio QF8 inside, powered by a Quantum Turbo 3 battery. The second light, for fill, was a Quantum Qflash 5d-R powered by a Turbo SC battery. I put a Light Box from The Ultimate Light Box System with special Quantum diffuser inside onto the flash with a large bounce card attached. The third light was another Quantum Trio powered by an SC battery. This had a Black Box from The Ultimate Light Box System on it to narrow the spread of light so it only hit the American flag and the drape, not the subjects. All three Quantum flashes were controlled at the camera with the Pilot QF9 commander unit. Each light was set to manual mode and the power levels were set during pre-event tests using a flash meter.
