I feel like I’m playing Where’s Waldo, except I’m trying to find all the different servers with their silver platters of hors d'oeuvres. My head keeps turning at any glimpse of food in an exorcist-like fashion, but I have yet to see one thing that seems remotely edible. How is there not a single mini hamburger or pizza-bite in this entire place? I release some sort of indecipherable hangry noise, a cross between a growl and a moan, causing Kane to laugh beside me and dig through his pocket. He finds what he’s looking for—pulling out a lollipop and dangling it between his fingers like a taunt.

“You stole my candy?” My voice is low, my words measured as I contemplate his murder.

“Stealing is such a harsh way of putting it. Besides, I’d be happy to share.” He slowly starts to unwrap the cherry-red sucker, the crinkle of the plastic somehow louder than the party roaring around us. His colorful fingers take their time, peeling it away bit by bit, leisurely, teasingly. “Just give me one thing.” Kane leans sideways with his shoulder against the wall, his legs crossed in the appearance of casual nonchalance.

“What?” I turn to face him, my hands on my hips, my lips pursed in annoyance.

He steps toward me, holding the sucker up like an offering. “I want to know where you learned to hotwire cars.” He dips the candy forward and drags it against my bottom lip before pulling away. I can’t help but dart my tongue out, drawing in that tiny taste of sweetness on my skin. He leans his head down, so close we look like lovers about to embrace, his deep chocolate eyes focused on my mouth. I narrow my eyes at the question, irritated at his mode of interrogation.

Maybe I should give the guys just a nugget of information. Then they might think they’ve discovered all my secrets and stop digging. This story isn’t important in the grand scheme of things anyway; just a little personal. I take a half-step back and clear my throat, my eyes darting away from the intensity of his gaze. I feel someone come up behind me, and I glance over to see Alec there. He gives me a soft bump of his shoulder and a tiny smile in greeting before settling back to watch the party.

I give him a small bump in return, before turning back to Kane and raising my shoulder in a half-hearted shrug. “It wasn’t all that hard. You can learn almost anything on the internet these days.”

“But why did you have to learn it?” Kane asks, insisting I show him a piece of my past to satisfy his curiosity. My cheeks heat and my irritation flares.

“What does it matter why?” I can’t help the discomfort that creeps into my voice, which just seems to draw him in closer.

“Because it matters. I won’t make you tell me, but I won’t share this sucker otherwise.” His threat is partly ridiculous and partly sweet, in his own Kane-kind-of-way.
