We Won't Know for SureâHopefully
Among believers one of the most intriguing and probably most discussed topics relating to the mark of the beast is what will the mark be? Will it be a chip? Will it be a tattoo? Will it be some other kind of technology?
Now, before we jump too far into this chapter, I want to make something perfectly clear. What the âmarkâ or âmarksâ are going to be is pure speculation. I do not believe there is any way right now to know for certain what the mark of beast will be, and if it is multiple kinds of marks, whether or not different technologies will be utilized.
I personally believe different technologies will be used for the mark and/or the name, and the number of the name. I also believe that because there seems to be some kind of difference in these markings, I am going to explain to you my theory that perhaps the type of mark a person will receive during the tribulation might be an indication about which part of society that individual belongs to.

To look at the type of marks that might be used by the Anti-Christâs kingdom I think we first need to look closely at the Biblical words used to describe them. Once again Revelation 13:16-17 reads, â16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.â (KJV)
The word used for âmarkâ in the Greek is âcharagmaâ. According to Strongâs it means, âa scratch or etching, that is, stamp (as a badge of servitude), or sculptured figure (statue): - graven, mark.â The word comes from the Greek root word âcharaxâ which according to Strongâs means, âTo sharpen to a point, through the idea of scratching; a stake, that is, (by implication) a palisade or rampart (military mound for circumvallation in a siege): - trench.â Strongâs goes on to explain that this word is âakin to the Greek word âgraphoâ which means, âto grave, especially to write; figuratively to describe.â
There are two things when looking at this word closely that jump off the page to me. First, this is some kind of stamp or etching. This would seem to indicate that whatever the âmarkâ is it is something that is pressed, written, or carved in the skin. I'm not dogmatic about this, but only taking from the definition things that appear interesting.
The second thing that deserves our attention about this word is how much is packed in to the definition. The word used here by the Holy Spirit to describe the mark is extremely profound. When you look at the definition of this word it not only relates to a sculpted figure or statue, but itâs also related to a badge of servitude, and a military term âcircumvallationâ which means to surround.
