Chapter Twelve
Two things concern me deeply right now. First, my belly is rumbling again. Second, there's this feeling like something crawling over my foot, much like an insect. I'm sure you know which one is more daunting. I'm not surprised I'm still hungry, the tea and sandwich I had at Reeta's barely satisfied me. I just don't want my belly talking again. Annoying little sod.
I investigate the crawling sensation on my leg first. The feeling seems to be located where my wounds are. I expected to see roaches or rats feasting on my cooked flesh, The Order's known for serving prisoners roaches as appetizers. None is there though. That's too bad, could've sued them for a fortune.
"Your Honor I fail to see how feeding prisoners to super-sized rodents is not a criminal offense." I imagine myself saying that to the judge.
Throw in some pixie dust, glowing eyes and mind control and I'm sure I could build a decent case. Shit, it'd be a slam-dunk. I can already see the Porsche and Lamborghini in my driveway. Smiles.
Unfortunately, though I see a sightless verminous, it's just as unnerving but also interesting. I see muscle and skin tissue forming and linking together to seal the wound. Regeneration isn't a new concept to me. I've seen it before and most beings with super regeneration abilities are magical beings such as Nothions, vampires and the even more impressive Swenfari. The thing is I'm not a Nothion, and I'm damn glad too. Not that I have anything against them, of course, it's just that, well, everyone pretty much hates their guts.
I shouldn't be super regenerating. I'm not magical and I haven't used any potions. The answer is obvious though, the Ether is working on my body. I'm not sure what else it could be doing to me, but I need to find out fast. And I know exactly who will tell me all I need to know.
Something between a gasp and snort grabs my attention. My eyes focus on the Yel across from me bringing itself upright. It shakes its head from side to side, eyes squinted shut. Probably regaling from the effects of being knocked out. Probably batshit out of his mind right now. Serves the yellow-eyed bastard right.
I wonder if he somehow hears my internal monologue because at that thought his eyes fly open and bore into me. Next thing I know he's coming right at me. My foot catches him in mid-lunge and sends him back. The truck teeters.
"Oi! Keep steady back there." One of the agents up front says.
"Hey! One of you get back here and put this demon down."
The Yel ignores him and charges me again. Still seated I spin to my right and the Yel slams straight into the side.
"I said keep it steady!"
It seems that's the demon's cue to come at me again. Maybe the real problem is the agent up front. Shut him up and the demon sleeps soundly. I'm wondering why it's awake in the first place.
