Concepts to Consider

• There are many processes and protocols that a facilitator can use with a group. However, there are essential elements that must be present in any successful facilitation event.

• Any process or protocol a facilitator uses should include the following strategies:

• ° A process for hearing every voice at the beginning and end of the meeting.

• ° A process for every person to have her or his voice heard during the meeting.

• ° An organizational process for participants to work in small groups.

• ° Public reporting of the results of discussions or brainstorming sessions.

• ° A process that allows for contemplative time for participants before speaking aloud in a group.

• ° The effective arrangement of the room for maximum interaction of participants.

• ° A process for recording participant responses.

• There are several leadership roles participants can hold: facilitator of a small group, recorder in a small group, serving as a member of a small group to develop a “straw dog,” participating fully, and complying with the working agreements.
