There you have it: a nighttime tale to ponder while sipping your dram. Sweet dreams—sweet, smoky, peaty, heathery dreams.

Solving the Mystery of Oysters

I had a day. And a map. And a car. Two of them I was super excited about. The other one… ugh. But still, if I could just grow a pair—no, I take that back, if I could just remember the fact that I was a fierce Lady-Dragon who breathes fire upon trolls, haters, and mansplainers—I could have the time of my life in my favorite place in the world. And I would do my damndest to banish the feelings of impending doom that hovered over my head and murmured, Tomorrow is the day you will suffer for all your life’s collective wrongdoings. You will face deep humiliation and be humbled to lie prostrate on the floor. Remember how awful you were in third grade? Yeah, payback time, baby.

Yeah, I should stick with the Lady-Dragon bit.

I pushed the guilty thoughts of “You should be studying!” right to the back of my head, as the only thing I knew I must now competently focus on was the act of driving, and not crashing and burning.

I was on an island. It’s not even a big island. And there were only a few roads. Surely if I just pulled out of the parking lot onto the first one available, I’d find great things of interest sooner or later. And then, eventually, find myself right back here in this parking lot. All roads lead to Rome, right?

I wanted to see the place I was going to be working, come tomorrow afternoon. Or at least acquaint myself with how to get there, so I’d not show up late and give anyone a reason to see my lack of punctuality as a reflection of my interest. I’d rather it simply state that when it comes to automobiles, I’m not terribly ambidextrous.

Now if there was one thing I was utterly capable of, it was guidance and navigation. I’d learned how to fly an airplane, getting my pilot’s license for no other reason than because Jonathan had a horrible sense of direction, and on more than one occasion when flying with him as aviator, I was quite certain we’d be landing on some unwelcoming military tarmac rather than at the general aviation port where we’d been instructed to set down our wheels.

I also wanted to make my way to Portnahaven to seek out the selkies I’d seen on a previous trip. Of course, when I say selkies, I mean seals. But to me, they were likely one and the same, as I was neck-deep in writing a middle-grade novel all about them and had studied those part-animal, part-humans for the last couple of years.

A selkie, for the unacquainted, are said to be mythical creatures from the sea. They wear their sealskins when at home within the depths of the ocean but can just as easily strip themselves of their coverings and make their way onto land, appearing as your average Joe or plain Jane.
