Chapter 20

“This is quite some party,” Dylan commented.

“Thanks,” Reed looked around the huge ballroom. They were standing near the DJ’s stage. Easy-listening, not-too-loud music played, and the room was still lit up, enabling all the party guests to eat and mingle. There was an energetic buzz in the air and the party vibe was building. It would probably reach a peak later when the dance music started.

“You Knights sure know how to put on an event.”

“I had nothing to do with it.”

Dylan laughed. “Except pay for it.”

“Except that.”

“I was wondering how you would outdo the New Year’s Eve party in the tent,” said Dylan, “but you have, and spectacularly so.”

“She has.” Reed pointed his beer bottle towards Olivia. She had made an art out of mingling with people. “This has been Olivia’s brainchild,” he replied, and cast his eyes around the room again.

“Who are you looking for?” Dylan asked. Reed turned his attention back to his ever-observant friend. “I’m making sure everyone’s having a good time.”

“It’s a Knight party,” Dylan grinned, before taking a sip of his beer. “Everyone’s having a good time. Relax,” he patted Reed on the shoulder. “It’s time you started to have a good time.”

“I am.” He would be now, especially because he’d just seen Jenna reappear. Every so often she would return to the ballroom and hover around the buffet tables at the back. Only this time, Rourke was sniffing around her like a dog in heat. It irritated the heck out of him. It shouldn’t have, but it did.

Dylan followed his line of sight. “If that’s Jenna Lawson, I can’t understand why you’d turn someone like that away. She is hot.” The note of admiration in Dylan’s voice didn’t go unnoticed.

“You’re taken,” Reed reminded him. “You shouldn’t even be looking at anyone, let alone finding anyone but Merry hot.”

“I don’t. I’m only making an observation because I’ve heard so much about this girl you and Rourke keep talking about.”

“We don’t keep talking about her,” Reed corrected him. He was careful about what he said to his friends.

“Well, I was curious to see her.”

“And now you have.” Reed glanced at Jenna again. With her hair styled that way, her blue-tipped ends were hidden.

Rourke suddenly appeared out of nowhere and started to talk to her. Reed crossed his arms and watched. He could tell by the way Jenna had folded her arms, by the tilt of her head that she was trying to be patient and polite. She had often been like that with him in the beginning.

“Great party, Reed,” Merry came up and hugged him.

“Thank you, I hope you’re enjoying yourself.”

“I haven’t been to any Valentine’s Day balls, and I didn’t know what to expect, but this is amazing,” she gushed. “You and Olivia are exceptional hosts.”

Reed nodded. “Thank you, but I believe the honor goes to Olivia. She organized all of this.”

Merry smiled, and he felt an arm around his waist. Suddenly, Olivia was by his side. “This is a beautiful party,” Merry said to her as Olivia tightened her grip around him and leaned in closer.
