VICTORIA

I don’t know why I was nervous. I felt stupid, standing in my room, debating if I should tell Brett that I was sick or if I should just ghost him all together. My stomach was in knots, and I was fairly certain that I just might puke up the sausage gravy and biscuits he’d made for dinner.

If that happened, I’d have all the proof I needed to get out of whatever Brett had planned for tonight.

Just as I was about to crawl out of my clothes and into my pajamas, there was a knock on my door. I started at it, wondering if I wished hard enough, could I make it Maggie standing on the other side?

I winced as the person knocked again. From the strong cadence, I knew that it wasn’t Maggie. It was Brett, and he wasn’t going away. So I sighed, fluffed my hair, and crossed the room.

I opened the door mid knock, and he stood there with his eyebrows raised, studying me. I had hoped that he would be dressed in a way that clued me in on what we were doing, but I had no such luck. He had on a flannel shirt with jeans and boots. His normal daily attire. Well, at least we weren’t headed to some fancy restaurant. I could cross that off the list in my head.

“We’re still on?” I asked as I opened my door wider.

Brett’s smile didn’t falter as he walked into my room. I hadn’t invited him in, and yet he strode in like he owned the place. “Come with me,” he said as he opened my door to our bathroom and crossed over to his side.

It felt strange, seeing how close we were to each other. The only thing separating us was a six-inch wall. It was nerve-racking, and I couldn’t help it when my mind wandered to what that meant for us.

I shook my head. Nothing. It meant nothing. Because there was no us. I was the ridiculous idiot who seemed to think that there might be something going on between us when I knew very well there wasn’t.

I was making things up in my mind that were going to lead to my demise.

“What’s in there?” I asked as I lingered in my doorway. I hadn’t crossed the threshold that led to his room. It was small, but I had to hold onto the last bit of control that I felt I had.

Brett popped into view with a mysterious smile on his lips. I was beginning to realize that every time that smile appeared, I was in trouble.

“Come in here and you’ll find out,” he said. There was a hint to his tone that caused my heart rate to pick up. My stomach lightened as I focused my vision into his room as if it held the answers to my questions. Brett shook his head. “You need to learn to live a little.”

I glared back at him. I knew what he said was true, but I wasn’t quite ready to take that leap.
