Chapter 7

Greyson stuck his head between the front seats, so his face was between Skylar and me. There was no mistaking his eagerness to meet a siren and be in the middle of whatever was happening. "Why are you driving so slow, mom?"

I pressed my lips together and kept my focus on the magic flowing outside the vehicle. "Because I'm feeling for her wards. Every paranormal has protections surrounding their property that are customized to meet their particular needs. She should have something that makes me want to turn around. Mundies can't move past it, but we can with a little focus."

Skylar turned away from staring out the front window. "So, does she have this ward?"

Emmie snorted. "The better question is: How can we get a ward around our property to keep creeps and jerks away?"

I chuckled with my oldest. "I will ask Aunt Phoebe to pay you guys a visit and do some wards for you. But I doubt there's one that is so specific. And to answer your question, Sky. There are wards here, but they're weak."

Greyson pointed out the windshield. "How did Aunt Aislinn and Aunt Violet beat us here? We left right away."

"Aislinn lives a few houses down, and knowing your Aunt Violet, she was checking on her. She needs to get to Eidothea as fast as possible and has been fighting the trip. When she finally agreed, you guys were coming, we decided to put it off until you left. However, we are both concerned the delay could cost either Aislinn's life or the baby's."

Skylar gasped, and her hand flew to her chest. "We shouldn't have come. She needs to go right away. You should take her. We can manage."

I shook my head from side to side. "I wouldn't want to miss this visit. Zreegy visits her twice a day, and Violet and I are both watching over her. Unless she shows signs of distress, we are fine. This time is for us. Put that worry out of your head. I would never sacrifice either life, you know that. And Aislinn needs the time to come up with what she's going to tell the baby's father, so the delay is good."

I parked the car, and we all climbed out. "Hey there," Violet called out as my kids and I climbed out of the vehicle. "Nedaphite is not here."

I clenched my jaw, praying this was not a more significant issue than Gardoss had let on when he called. "You're sure? One of her neighbors called in and reported she was having problems with her power."

Aislinn threw up her hands and turned back to face the house. "Unless she's locked in there and ignoring us, we're sure. She was getting pressure from her family to return to the fold before she lost her voice."

Violet started walking toward the back of the house, and I followed. "Her wards are a blip compared to what we experienced last time. I'm not even sure they would keep mundies away now."

"I noticed that, too.
