The house was so different today than it had been in the weeks prior. The house itself was no longer holding its breath, waiting for its mistress to pass away. There was a sense of relief and hope in the air.

Tarja jumped onto my lap and prodded my stomach. It was enough to jolt me out of my wandering thoughts. I was more than a little distracted. Hattie’s attorney sat on the loveseat across from me and went over the details of what I had inherited. After he mentioned the house and the business, he went on to list other properties around the world as well as vehicles.

My mind fritzed when he mentioned how much I was now worth. I was a gazillionaire or something. He was looking at me and waiting for me to answer. Little help here, I sent to my familiar.

“He asked if you want to keep your personal account in a trust set up like Hattie had hers. You had better pay attention. You need to handle this transfer right away.”

I nodded my head to both her and him. “Yes. That sounds like it’s the best approach.” Honestly, I had no idea whether it was or not. I trusted Hattie’s judgment where that was concerned. She ran a successful business and created this massive conglomerate.

At least the kids won’t have to rely on their dad to pay for college. Given what his little tart had already convinced him to do, it was entirely possible she would have him cut them off completely, too.

“Wonderful. If you’ll just sign where indicated, please.” He slid a stack of papers my way. I wasn’t even halfway through the signatures when the doorbell rang. I was about to get up and get that when my mom called out.

“I’ve got it, sweetie. You finish up in there.”

My heart made an impression of the Road Runner inside my chest while I debated if that was the right choice. Thoughts of what Myrna could do, ran like a peep show inside my grey matter, making me shake my head in denial. She couldn’t cross the protections. Tarja had assured me no one could breach them even if I still needed to renew them.

I got through the rest of the papers quickly then pushed them back to him. “Is there anything else?”

He shook his head and put everything in his briefcase. “Not at this time. The board will be calling a meeting soon to go over the change in ownership. I’ll send you a message when that is scheduled to take place.”

I got up and followed him to the door. My throat dried up, and my girl parts stood at attention when we passed by the sexiest guy I’d ever laid eyes on. He was well over six feet tall with short black hair that was artfully messy. His sapphire eyes burned right through to my soul.

I thanked the attorney and turned to face the group standing in the entryway. My mother was shamelessly flirting with the guy while Nana was openly leering at him.
