Chapter 10

Prue left her father and found herself two houses down from her grandmother’s. How had he been so close and she had not felt the power contained within him? He must have erected some type of shield around the dwelling. Dreyden would have yelled bloody murder when he found her missing.

After finding her new home empty, Prue headed to Pati’s. It was the most likely location for Dreyden to go. If she was mistaken, she’d head over to Topper’s house. Those two were the only places he knew the people who lived there.

There was a lot of activity around Pati’s place. She had guessed right. Prue saw Danyal and Frost deep in a discussion as she approached. She imagined they were talking about her disappearance.

She saw the relief depicted in both their faces when they spotted her. Danyal yelled for Dreyden with excitement in his voice. Dreyden appeared at the rear door shortly after her eyes roamed to that spot.

Prue ran into Dreyden’s arms. Now she felt safe. His body temperature heated to warm her. She imagined it was just one of his many abilities she’d learn with time.

“We should get you inside,” Dreyden said. “There are a lot of people who have been looking for you who will want to know where you have been. I am at the top of that list.”

They entered Pati’s house and Dreyden had not been exaggerating, the place was packed. There were several faces she did not recognize. A number of maps were laid out and whiteboards filled with information littered the room. How did they manage to do all this work in the short period of time she was gone?

“Oh my God,” Pati said as she came over to embrace her. “Where the hell have you been?”

“My father took me after my bath,” Prue said. “You have really assembled an army in a matter of hours. I’m impressed.”

Pati looked confused and glanced at Dreyden for an answer. The alien shrugged his shoulders in response. People around her were acting strangely.

“You’ve been gone for a week, Prudie,” Pati said. “We literally turned the town upside down. Our checking everyone’s health for the CDC was a great cover. But that is all beside the point, where have you been?”

Prue sat at the kitchen table. Several bottles of wine were open, so she poured herself a glass. She didn’t care if the glass was clean, she needed a drink. Dreyden sat beside her, taking her hand in his.

“As far as I was able to perceive time after I woke, I had a short conversation with my father and left,” Prue informed the people around her. “I couldn’t have been asleep for a week.”

In order to prove her statement, she ran her hand down her smooth shin. If she had been unconscious for that long, the little hairs on her leg would have grown. Somehow time had been manipulated.

“All I know is I walked out of the house two doors down from my grandmother’s and came straight here,” Prue said.
