They reported the robbery in Silver City, and Maggie slipped a letter to Maxwell onto the coach headed for Boise. Seeing to the remains of the express messenger, Adams, wasted another day. Exhausted and with frayed nerves, she returned to Money Creek with Cal late in the afternoon.
Lily greeted them at the gate with good news. Clara and Alecâs baby had arrived, a healthy baby boy. The following day, Cal took Lily and Rose to the Cross B for a visit.
Maggie declined Calâs invitation to go with them. âThey wonât want a stranger in the house right now. It should just be family.â
Cal threaded his fingers through hers and bent to whisper in her ear. âYou can be family the minute you give the word.â His voice rumbled and sent a tickly feeling through her.
Maggie longed to grasp at the happiness he offered, to throw away caution and embrace a future with Cal McConnell, but she couldnât. Not until this case was finished, not until she was free to tell him the truth about herself. âIâll see you when you get back tomorrow. Give my best wishes to Alec and Clara.â
With Lily and Rose looking on, Cal didnât kiss her good-bye, but the intent gleam in his eyes told her that was the only reason he restrained himself.

âKeep your voice down. I canât just sashay up to the jail under the eyes of the town.â
He narrowed his eyes. âThen do it after dark. Itâs about time you started treating me like a partner in this investigation. I want to hear everything you know about this last holdup.â
Give me patience, Lord.
After her coffee at the Rusty Bucket, where Georgia was too busy to sit and talk, Maggie spent some time chatting with Joe Williams at the stage office. She also engineered an âaccidentalâ meeting with Hecker from the bank when they both happened to enter Purdyâs Mercantile at the same time. Joe and Hecker each expressed their disgust and frustration at the latest robbery, solicitous for her welfare, sorry sheâd been on the stage when it got held up. If either of them was in on the thieving, he didnât let on.
With no breaks in the case, she pinned a lot of hope on Maxwell and Trace being able to get information out of Kruger. She went
