Chapter 15

Alyra,

It’s been two weeks since arriving in Wilderland, and I must say, our endeavors have been more fruitful than I first anticipated. The clan welcomed us from the start and seems eager to help in any way possible. Stitch and I have moved closer to the King’s Highway where we will begin building. Soon as we finally agree on the type of shelter to build.

Our mule-headed Stitch, as it turns out, is quite the visionary. He’s sketched a diagram which uses the natural trees as part of the building’s framework, eliminating unnecessary logging and some of the quarrels over the matter, I should add. I spend most of my time negotiating and persuading. Once again, I’m grateful Stitch is here with me. He’s a natural with persuasion and even though he still drives me to utter distraction at times, I can’t imagine doing this without him.

Please don’t brag on him too much, your praise will only go to his head.

“Miss, please.” DezPierre nudged her arm. “I must clean up breakfast, and you must check on your father. He slept fitfully last night.”

She moved her Ledge-o-graph out of the way so he could finish wiping the table and gather her remaining dishes. “I think we should call the town healer. I’m out of ideas. He’s not healing properly. Now his foot is swelling again.”

“Indeed. Master Stephan was mending well. Then he goes out to the barn to check on woolly-ones and reopens his wound. I see you come by your stubbornness honestly, Miss.” Dez placed the bowl and cup on top of his head as he climbed down from the chair.

“Thanks a lot.” She reopened her book to finish reading Lotari’s letter.

Stitch is training anyone who wishes to learn archery and swordsmanship. I’m impressed by his tenacity but concerned all the same. He still refuses to tell me what drove him after those head-hunters the day we arrived. Clearly, something from his past still haunts him. Even to the point of causing nightmares.

He refuses to talk about it. When they occur, he works with a vengeance the following day as if some invisible beast drives him onward.

Perhaps being so close to Racah disturbs him more than he’s willing to let on.

Enough about our issues. How have you been, dear? I’m sorry your brother still avoids you and your father’s injury continues to bother him. I suggest you send for a more advanced healer if one is available. I do know of another solution, but it’s beyond your skills, I’m afraid and quite drastic.

Are you keeping up with your plant studies, Alyra? I certainly hope so, for you have a fine aptitude for the healing arts. And how are you coming along with the Elderad Instructor?

Alyra’s studies of late had been more about dragons and lighting herself up than learning plant lore. She’d gone through Lotari’s journal many times, searching for a new treatment to help Da. She scanned the room for any sign of Riyah. Since they’d started lessons, she found herself able to detect his vague form.
