Chapter 24

Lucky should have been shot right in the neck, but somehow the two shooters conspired to miss on either side, hitting both his shoulders.

He spun around and raised his rifle to fire at them, but for some reason his hands didn’t move. It took him a second to realize that both shoulders had been simultaneously disabled. He stared down dumbly as the pulse rifle slid out of his grip. “Well, that’s just peachy.”

“That’s gonna take a second to regen!” Rocky said.

“Get it done!”

“Lucky!” shouted Dabs.

He spun around and saw there were four men making a fast rush forward on her side.

“On it!” Malby shouted, and started to lay down fire with Dabs.

Anna stood up defiantly and started firing her punch pistol at the oncoming men. She hit the first man square in the face, shades of Dulles, but this guy was wearing a combat helmet and the firepower from the handheld weapon was no match for it. It would take a half-dozen shots at close range to kill the man.

But it did blind him for a moment, making him check his run. Malby cleaned up the mess, putting four perfectly-placed rounds in the man’s midsection. Even in the expensive Empire combat armor, the man crumpled, the internal seals broken at his chest, venting air. Malby kept pounding on the man and he spun around, guts spilling loose into the zero-G.

Another man stepped up to take his place, and Anna again fired her peashooter at the man, hitting him center mass but doing next to no damage.

“Anna, down!” Lucky screamed, trying desperately to raise his stupid useless arms and make himself a big target rushing at her back, his mag boots struggling for purchase along the wire-strewn floor, knowing that while she was standing and firing in futility at the men rushing from her right, she was completely exposed to the men on the left, who had already managed to incapacitate him with a couple of well-placed shots.

One boot lost contact, and Lucky kicked his leg out; then he got it back, and then the other came loose. Just as he reached her, he felt his spiders telling him to dodge out of the way of the shots coming at his back, but for once he ignored them. He felt the impact on his already dead shoulder. That one didn’t hurt, but the one on his right ass cheek did.

He’d really prefer not to get shot in the ass. That was Malby’s job.

Lucky finally reached Anna and crashed into her, practically giving her whiplash as he smashed into her. The punch pistol flew from her hands. “Get your royal ass down!” he shouted.

In his haste to get her down, he managed to crash into Dabs, who was shoved forward into the lip she was firing over, her pulse rifle spinning wildly upward, floating out of her hand and off into the open space directly above them. For the first time, Lucky realized how close he was to just floating away if his mag boots failed.
