The only benefit of my early morning start is that I have adequate time to visit Ben before his traditional Sunday family day ritual begins.

I plunk myself down on the edge of his bed and fill him in completely on the disastrous events at the track. “I think I’ve lost the ability to understand girls,” I admit.

“She’s not like other girls, you’ve acknowledged that yourself.” A slight smile plays on his lips.

“How can you find this funny?”

“It’s just so unbelievable.” He shakes his head. “I’ve watched you charm the ladies so effortlessly all your life. You may have finally met your match.” Now he’s outwardly grinning.

“I think you could be right,” I say grimly. “What am I going to do?”

“If you still want to be with Ariana, then you’re going to have to try a lot harder Cal. A LOT harder.”

I know he speaks the truth. Winning Ariana’s trust is not going to be straightforward, or for the faint-of-heart. But I’ve never wanted anything, or anyone, as much as I want her. So I make a solemn vow to myself: I won’t give up, no matter what it takes—not until I have won her heart, or died trying.
