PART 2

TWENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

THIRTY-TWO

BEN

“She knows about us. Dammit!” I grunt as I pace around the kitchen of Tonya’s lake cabin.

“Well, she isn’t stupid,” Tonya says, crossing her arms at her chest. “That means that you weren’t smart enough.”

“I did everything you told me, Tonya.”

“I hate to break it to you, but if you did, she wouldn’t have any suspicions.”

I grab a beer out of the fridge and take a big gulp, trying to drown my irritation.

To be fair, I didn’t plan on being a father at the age of twenty-two. Or living with a girl I didn’t want to be with. Meanwhile, being in love and having an affair with another girl, who has some bizarre plan of revenge to get rich by using the girl I’m living with.

I didn’t plan to get married this early in life either. But then, Tonya says it will be necessary and the baby is going to be our trump card.

Tonya is smart. This plan is screwed up. But then, I hate thinking about what Lizzy did to Tonya back at the group home. Maybe, she does need to share her future success. Tonya deserves justice. She calls it reimbursement.

If only I didn’t have to live in that small studio in town. It’s depressing.

Tonya’s lake cabin is much better. We’ve been meeting up here weekly for about half a year. She said some distant relative lived here, and she moved in right after the group home to help out. The relative died and willed the cabin to her.

It’s lovely here now that it’s summer. Driving here in the winter to see Tonya during snowstorms and whatnot was a bitch. But then, I still had my dorm. It was easier to have an excuse for going MIA for several days. With graduation off my plate and having to move in with Lizzy, I have to use my mom as a cover to spend weekends here.

Usually, Lizzy uses my car to take me to the airport. Then Tonya comes and picks me up. Weekends at the cabin are a breath of fresh air, and then it’s back to Lizzy’s.

I know, I know, it sounds shady, but, hey, I’m not the only one who lives a double life. I support Lizzy morally and with the money my parents send me. She should be grateful. And I do want to take care of my daughter in the future.

It’s just that I want to be with Tonya. In the summers, it’s a quick one-hour drive from Old Bow to the cabin. I’m tired of hiding.

This whole thing with Lizzy and Tonya has gotten out of control. It would all be fine if Lizzy didn’t get knocked up. When I found out, I cautiously asked her what she wanted to do about it. I would’ve been fine with anything, emphasis on anything. She said she wanted to keep it.

No surprise.

I was angry, but who was I to be angry at but myself? I used protection every time to avoid this exact situation.
