Fangak County.

IT WAS LATE AFTERNOON WHEN they finally walked into the camp. Tau left a seething Roger behind. He had no strength left. The plane stripped him of a dream. A brief spell before it disappeared into the blue sky. Numb he stared before him. Words turned to bile which burnt his mouth, and when they stopped he spewed it out.

In his heart he knew she was better off amongst her own people. Her assumption about them correct, they did not fit—their worlds too far apart. No matter what he would have done, it would not be enough.

The way things played out, her survival was dim. Her vulnerability was her biggest flaw. Although gone she left hope behind, imparted knowledge which they could use. They were better off. It was a short-lived relationship that gave him a glimpse of what love was.

Roger's rage did not help matters. His cursing marathon riled him.

"You owe me!" he yelled when they got in the boat. Tau ignored him. His loss was greater than Roger's pettiness.

At the camp reality demanded answers from everyone. The camp's state dismal and their future bleak. Roger's arm needed attention and Isaac dealt with it. For now he was their best medical aid. One shot had hit the leader with the last round, and his arm was in a sling. Blood covered his right side.

At their hut her few belongings were neatly stacked. The bed was unmade, her fragrance lingered in the air. Her brush and spray laid on the small table with a handheld mirror, next to it a hair clip.

With the Bible open he read the scripture.

PSALM 23.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

He bowed, allowing the words to become part of him. Her God promised her safety from them, and He did.

"I will miss you, Sonia Main Gbadamosi." One lonely teardrop appeared, it softened the scarred face. At her meagre clothes he picked up another scarf she wore in her hair, wrapped it around the Bible and concealed it.

Tau watched the surrounding commotion as people tried to clean the campsite; others made fires.

A small hand touched his arm: Fiza. They were the only people who would miss her.

The bond a precious commodity.
