I wake from gray light sifting through the curtains. The empty ice-cream carton lies overturned directly in my line of sight, a reminder of the fun we had with its melted contents well past the midnight hours. I should be tired, but I’m not. I’m well-kneaded dough, soft and supple, ready to spring back under Wyatt’s touch. Except he’s still asleep.

As quietly as I can, I get out of bed and tiptoe to the kitchen. Our leftovers sit forgotten in the pan and I grab a few noodles with my fingers. Still delicious. I find a chunk of baguette, too, and a can of seltzer in the fridge, and bring my loot back with me to the bedroom.

“You left,” he mumbles against the pillow.

I deposit the food on the nightstand and crawl on top of him. “I was starving.”

He wraps his arms around me with a sigh. “Did you find anything?”

“Mmm-hmm.”

“You smell good.”

I laugh. “I smell like you.”

He flips me over and raises my arms above my head, then makes a show of sniffing my hair, my neck, down the side of my breast. I giggle, setting off a loud gurgling in my stomach that makes me laugh harder.

He resurfaces from beneath the covers, a bemused expression on his face. “Was that you?”

“Told you I was hungry.”

“Good lord, then let’s get some food in you before the cave troll gets even angrier. Here, have some bread. I’ll be right back.”

I take a bite and chew slowly while admiring his retreating behind.

“I’d like to go see how far Loel’s come at the site sometime today,” he calls from the bathroom. “Want to join me?”

As flattering as it is that he’s open to keeping me around, it might be better not to allow him too much too soon. Anyway, I have plans. “I’m meeting Mia in a bit,” I call back. “We have some stuff to do for the house.”

“What kind of stuff?”

“We’re finishing a sign that we’re putting up. Like to name it.”

“Gotcha.”

I scroll through my emails. There’s one from Mr. Archer, and I open that first. New project, exploratory meeting Tuesday, personal friends of his, great visibility. I know you all will make me proud. The plural pronoun automatically makes me check the address line to see who else is on the team, and my heart stutters as Wyatt’s name comes into view. How about that for timing?

I have to add speed showers to his superpowers because he returns a few minutes later, drying his hair with a towel. He picks something up from the floor and presents it to me with a flourish. “Your undergarments, Ms. Porter,” he says with an adorably bashful grin.

My stomach does a somersault, but I chalk it up to indigestion from the food I just gobbled down.

“Much obliged, Mr. Montego.” I jump out of bed and gather the rest of my clothes.

“Hey, did you see this?” He holds up his phone. He looks half amused, half troubled.

I pull on my skirt and adjust the waistband.
