Chapter Eighteen

When I return to my room, I fall down on my bed and run my fingers over my lips. They are still tingling from Owen’s mouth touching them. I close my eyes as I replay the last few minutes. I can still feel his hands on my face, his arms around me, and his body up against mine.

I know I need to get ready, but my heart is pounding so fast right now.

I reach for my phone and send Fran a text letting her know we need to talk tonight. When I finally pull myself together, I look at the plastic bag containing my outfit for the picture. The sooner I put the thing on, the sooner I can take it off.

I stand in front of the full-length mirror, trying to adjust everything. I lift, separate, bend, snap—basically anything I can do to make sure things stay where they are supposed to. Although the outfit doesn’t look terrible on me, I definitely don’t fill out the top as well as the other girls will.

I put on a light pink blouse and knot it right in the center, the coconuts are peeking out at the top. This addition actually doesn’t look too bad, and my plan is to wait until the very last second to take the blouse off for the picture.

I curl my hair and put more makeup on than I usually do, anything to draw attention to my face and away from everything below my neck.

As I add gloss to my lips, I can’t help but think back to being in Owen’s room. I shake my head to shift my focus back to the task at hand. I slide my feet into my sandals and do one more check in the mirror.

Let’s get this nightmare over with.
