Chapter Fourteen

Every second weekend of March, Young Advertising footed the bill for a three-day voluntary company retreat. This year marked the ninth annual Y.A.B.E. weekend getaway (Young Advertising Bonding Experience) and was being held at Twenty 3 Ranch, about two hours outside of the city. The distance and the fact children weren’t invited (a company rule, not a rule of the ranch), only spouses and significant others, kept a lot of employees home. Conner figured his father planned it that way to scrimp and save money he wouldn’t even miss. Less people meant less money spent, but he could still promote himself as a generous employer. The man was a schmuck, but a rich genius one.

Even though employee’s spouses were invited, Wade Young never brought his wife to a single Y.A.B.E. It could have been because Connie wasn’t a camping person, or perhaps because he never invited her.

The previous two years, Conner brought someone who didn’t mean much to him, but this year he opted to come alone. He drove himself, Eric, and Eric’s boyfriend, Kyle. They’d been together for over a year but were still just dating, even though Kyle had proposed--three times. It’s not like Eric was seeing anyone else or even wanted to. He simply wasn’t ready to settle down just yet. Conner had those feelings before, so he understood. But now...settling down with the perfect woman consumed Conner’s thoughts. He just needed to figure out who it was.

He’d gone on two more dates with Karen since their first date a month earlier, but had yet to kiss her again. The moment never felt right. He doubted it ever would. While she filled the void in his dating calendar, Conner focused more on his hopeful promotion rather than his lack of a love life. Unfortunately, that also meant thinking about Jenna--the woman who could cost him his dream of running Young Advertising one day.

He didn’t know if he was avoiding her or she was avoiding him, but they hadn’t seen each other since that day in her office after meeting with his father. His dad definitely was unaware of that fact. As far as Wade Young was concerned, Jenna and Conner met at least twice each week to discuss Calypso Candies.

Conner stepped out of his car onto the gravel and breathed in the scent of fresh pine. The ranch was on a gorgeous and secluded property. Maybe nature was exactly the thing he needed to get out of his own headspace.

One of the staff members for the resort greeted them with great enthusiasm, welcoming them to Twenty 3 Ranch and handing them each a schedule and list of options for activities. She also directed them to the office where check-in was being hosted. Kyle wheeled their large piece of luggage behind him while Conner had a medium-sized bag hoisted over his shoulder.

Once registered, they were directed to their room assignments. The ranch had small cabins for couples and larger group cabins for people who came by themselves. Conner was unfortunate enough to be in a cabin with nineteen other men from the company.
