TODAY’S CHALLENGE

When we first fell in love, we were able to connect with each other just about anytime we were together. Once we have children, we understand this scenario doesn’t always work the same way. The challenge today is another easy one. Before you see your husband the next time, look for a way to let him know you are thinking about him — even if he cannot respond. If your husband has access to his cell phone while he is at work or at home taking care of the kids, send a message. If you both have a chance to check your social media accounts in the middle of the day, have a post waiting for him.

When I was completing this challenge in my own relationship, I saw my husband’s truck parked at city hall, where he was in a meeting as our town’s mayor. I pulled over, grabbed a pen, and wrote a note. I tucked it under his windshield wiper and left before he saw me. I had done something similar when we were dating, and repeating that action reminded my heart how much I enjoyed telling him — in the middle of the day, for no particular reason — that I love him.

If today was like the first day you fell in love, you probably wouldn’t wait until you saw him next before you talked to him. You would likely reach out in some way without even thinking twice about it. A call, a text, a chat, a note.

Today remember that love. Remember how excited you were to say, “Just thinking about you,” and you hoped he was feeling the same way. So let’s be real for a second. Your husband might not respond the way you want him to after you complete this challenge. He might ignore the message. He might miss the gesture. He might not reply to the text. He might not “like” or acknowledge the social media post. But you are sowing seeds of love in your relationship, and I want you to remember that this process isn’t about changing your husband. Right? It is about changing how you love your husband. We can’t change our history, and we can’t change our circumstances. And the reality is we cannot change our spouses. But we can change our own attitudes, and that is a very good start.
