TEN

Makenzie had been ominously quiet since they’d discovered she was also a target.

As Ian trailed her out of the castle’s administration building and into the valet parking lot down the hill, her silence crawled along his nerves.

He’d grown used to conversation as they’d both started to trust one another a little more. She bounced ideas off him, even though he could tell she stopped short of giving him every detail about the case.

Not that he could blame her, given his status with the team.

Everything was a discussion. Probably, during their partnership, there had been a lot of conversational give and take. It was likely they often went over the details of a case and laid theories out for one another’s opinions.

He chewed the inside of his cheek. They’d probably worked well together. Like light squeezing around the edges of drawn curtains in his mind, he had the feeling they had. Not a single memory backed that up, but just like he’d known he’d been at her father’s farm before, he knew they’d been a team the bad guys feared. “Maybe that’s why someone is after us.”

Makenzie stopped in the middle of the sidewalk, halfway between the building and the valet lot, and Ian stumbled to a stop to keep from running into her. “What?” She addressed the mountain that rose on the other side of the parking lot.

Ian stood beside her, careful not to touch her. If he did, he might get another mental image of a kiss. That was the last thing he needed right now. “Sorry. I was thinking out loud.”

“You do that a lot. Well, you used to do that a lot.” She continued to stare at the parking lot, where the white Tesla gleamed, alone in a sea of empty spaces. “I wonder why they haven’t towed it?” She sniffed and turned her head to look at him. “So why do you think someone is after us?”

Her voice was tense in its too-calm timbre. She was angry and trying not to show it.

Thankfully, the anger wasn’t directed at him this time. He inhaled deeply, trying to make the thought he hadn’t meant to say out loud come together. It wasn’t only his memory that was locked up. Butler’s drug cocktail seemed to have slowed his creative mind, the part that let him conjecture about what a criminal might be thinking.

Or maybe he was just standing too close to Makenzie.

He eased away and shoved his hands into his pockets. “Okay. You and I were a team for how long?”

“Three years.” Her voice was strung even tighter than it had been a few seconds earlier.

Probably because it bit her that he couldn’t remember. He started to apologize, then opted not to. It wouldn’t change the situation.

So he worked through his theory some more. “I’m guessing we made enemies. We probably put away a lot of powerful people who thought they were untouchable.”

“We did.” She gripped the Tesla’s key fob, which she’d gotten from the office, tighter. “You know how Overwatch works.
