After lunch they continued their investigation.

“I didn’t spend much time around Dawn and Joe back when they were a couple,” Tanya said. They were on the road in the SUV, and Danny had just made the turn she’d indicated. “So I can’t tell you much about him.”

At the end of lunch, Danny had suggested that they try to question Joe Flynn, and Tanya had readily agreed. Now, Danny was trying to decide if having Tanya with him when he approached Joe would help or hurt his chances at getting any useful information out of the man. It was pretty clear Tanya still resented Calvin’s father for offering no emotional support when Dawn found out she was pregnant.

“I know that Joe owns the auto body repair shop we’re headed to, Champion Auto Body,” she added. “Supposedly he’s a hard worker, and Dawn has never complained about him not paying child support.” There was a thoughtful silence before she added, “I don’t know what his problem was back when Dawn really needed him. I’ve approached the issue with her a few times, but she’s made it clear she doesn’t want to talk about it. Or him. Not with me, anyway.”

Danny further considered the strategy he wanted to use when he questioned Joe. Yesterday, after they’d picked up Dawn at the airport, Detective Romanov had come by the inn to interview her. The cop had expressed her intent to interview Elliott and Joe, as well. Maybe she already had. That might be why Elliott was now hard to find. He could be aware that he was a suspect. It could also mean that Joe knew about the attack on Tanya and his son. He might be angry at Tanya for not telling him about it.

Champion Auto Body was a moderate-size shop with six work bays and a small but tidy front office. A window spanned the wall behind the service counter, and through it, Danny could see several expensive cars and trucks being worked on. Joe clearly catered to some high-end clients.

“Good afternoon. How can we help you?” A young man with the name Robbie stitched onto his shirtfront walked up to the counter to greet them.

“We’re here to talk to Joe,” Tanya said.

Danny held back a grimace at the sharp tone in her voice. Robbie, who was clearly skilled at customer service, didn’t indicate that he’d noticed it. “Is he expecting you?” he asked pleasantly.

“No, but I’m his son’s aunt. He should want to talk to me.”

“Tanya.”

Danny turned toward the voice. A man had stepped out of an office, and he looked a lot like Calvin. Same brown hair, same brown eyes. A similar shape to his face. But while Calvin’s expression was generally sweet and trusting—except for moments when the poor little guy was thinking about the attacks on him—this man’s expression was hard and suspicious.

“Joe,” Tanya said, taking a few steps toward him. “Do you have a few minutes to talk?”

“About what?” He crossed his arms over his chest.
