The conversation with Kyle had gone better than Cassidy expected. But if he thought sheâd force herself to remember the worst day of her life, he had another thing coming. Living through it once was more than enough.
She shifted in the passenger seat of his truck, finding a comfortable position as he drove to their next appointment with the witness to her cousin Lauraâs accident. Theyâd planned to leave the outlier deaths out of the equation for now, but Kyle understood her desire for answers, so heâd agreed to add Lauraâs case to their agenda.
âThanks for lunch. The café has amazing food.â She glanced at him and caught a slight grin that caused his dimples to appear, making him a little too appealing for her own good. A small dagger of guilt stabbed her heart. She shouldnât have those thoughts about her best friendâs fiancé. Even if Amber was no longer alive.
âIâm glad you liked it. The guys and I think itâs the best food around.â
âYouâre not wrong.â Her body relaxed at the easy conversation.
His gaze drifted to the rearview mirror and back to the road. âWhere to?â
She flipped through the file on her lap. âThereâs a man in dirty clothes who looked homeless that the officer noted saw someone at the scene of Lauraâs accident. However, he was drunk at the time, so his statement isnât trustworthy.â
âItâs worth a shot.â Kyle drummed his fingers on the steering wheel. âI have to admit, I havenât seen anything conclusive so far. The eyewitness to the car hijacking, the hit-and-run, along with the mother, who is adamant about her son not going on the boat without a lifejacket, gives me pause. But Iâm not as convinced as you are that a serial killer connects them. I donât see it.â
Yeah, she understood his dilemma. At times, she questioned herself, but her gut reaction wouldnât leave her alone.
âLetâs keep at it until you have the proof you need.â Cassidy refused to allow a killer to go free because of doubt, but the lack of trust in her abilities hurt. She knew it shouldnât, but it did.
He glanced at her. âIâll keep an open mind.â
Those wordsâmore than she expectedâmeant more than he knew. âThanks.â
His gaze drifted to the driverâs side mirror, then jerked to the rearview mirror.
âKyle?â Cassidy twisted in her seat. A large black blob floated in the air. She sucked in a breath. A drone about thirty yards back followed them. âHow long has that thing been there?â
âNot long, Iâm sure of that.â
âPlans?â
He tossed her his cell phone. âTake a picture and send it to Doug.â
Extending her arm as far as possible into the back seat to get the best shot through the rear window, she snapped several photos. Task accomplished, she sent a quick text to Doug with the images of the drone.
The wait for Kyleâs partner to respond felt like an hour. The phone buzzed.
Cassidy answered the call. âGo ahead, Doug. Youâre on speaker.â
âGet out of there. That thing is weaponized.â
Kyle muttered under his breath and punched the accelerator.
