* * *

Chandler was shocked as he saw Bristol jump off the horse. His chest tightened. He hit his brakes, sending his truck sideways. The front end dipped into the ravine, but he couldn’t stop. The truck slid down the embankment and slammed into the bottom. His head snapped forward from the force.

He slung open his door and ran to where Bristol lay on the ground, her body contorted in a tangled mess. “Are you all right?”

A moan escaped her, and she twisted into a ball.

“Bristol, it’s me. Chandler. Where do you hurt?”

Her eyes locked on to his, and she blinked. “Everywhere.”

A smile tugged at his lips, relief flooding him. Tucker appeared beside them and sniffed Bristol, checking her out.

Chandler gently touched her shoulder. “We only have a little time before those guys catch up to us.”

“Are you...?” She gasped. “Were you hurt? There was an explosion.”

She was concerned about him? “I’m fine.”

“You crashed into the ravine. I couldn’t bear...”

Worry settled back into his throat. Maybe she was more injured than he believed. Might have hit her head. “I’m not hurt.”

“The horse. What about the Appaloosa?”

He glanced up and saw the horse standing on this side of the ravine, his chest rising and falling and slicked up with lather. “The horse is not harmed.”

A look at the suspects’ truck had him wondering if he’d be able to get it out of the ditch. If not, they’d be on foot. A place he didn’t want to be if those guys got back on their trail. And no doubt, they would pursue them again, if they weren’t already.

Her eyes closed, almost like in sleep. If it weren’t for the scrapes and dirt-covered arms, she wouldn’t appear injured.

“Bristol, can you move?”

Her eyes fluttered open.

“Those guys are still after us. We need to find Spencer.”

“Spencer. I’m ready.” She sat up and struggled to her feet, weaving.

He held on to her arm until she got her balance.

“Do I need to get back on the horse?”

“Let me see if I can get the truck out.” He turned to move, but her hand shot out.

“No. Here they come.” She nodded, indicating the top of the hill. The two men ran toward them.

The truck’s front tire was buried halfway up the side. It was possible he could get it out...but maybe not. “Let me see if I can catch the horse.”

He whistled lightly. “Here, boy.”

As he approached, the horse jerked his head up, his ears perked. The reins were caught on a branch. Please don’t run off. He stepped closer, and footsteps sounded behind him.

Bristol moved past him. “I can catch him.”

A quick look over his shoulder showed the men were closing in on them. “We need to hurry.”

“I’ve got you.” Bristol reached out and grabbed the bridle and then pulled on the reins until they were free of the limb. She went to put her foot in the stirrup, when she swayed.

Chandler picked her up and swung her into the saddle, his injured arm burning from the effort.
