SEVEN

The paramedics insisted both she and Dustin go to the hospital. She agreed to go but didn’t care for the many hours they had to wait to be treated. They needed to get to someplace safe, and she didn’t think the hospital security would be enough to protect them. At the very least, she didn’t think they’d have any peace of mind while they were there. The worry on Dustin’s face was real and troubling. He’d seen her trapped inside that house and had feared losing her. She needed to get him someplace where he could truly feel safe.

She couldn’t help thinking of Kenzie. Where was she tonight? How safe did she feel? How long would it take before they were able to bring her home? But then she found herself wondering what kind of home Kenzie would be returning to. No house. All of their possessions gone. And would Abby and Kenzie still be at odds with one another?

She was glad to see the smile on Dustin’s face when they climbed into Luke’s SUV after leaving the hospital. At least one of her kids was still happy to be with her—even if she could see some tension and anxiety hovering behind his smile. She was thankful Luke was here but she could see too he was worried about her. For that matter, she was worried about him. She doubted he was all that happy to be back on the ranch—a place that held so many unpleasant memories.

As children, they’d spent a lot of their time running and climbing around the grounds, the barns and outbuildings when they were there, anything to stay away from the main house and the people inside. As he got older, Luke often even refused to step foot there. His resentment for his grandfather and how the old man had treated him and his mother was a deep and real wound.

She watched his body tense as they drove beneath the sign that announced they had entered Harmon Ranch. It was a sprawling five thousand acres with livestock.

The house was massive too. It contained twelve bedrooms and spoke to the wealth the Harmon name engendered. It had been built by Luke’s great-grandfather and added on to through the years. She knew that it had once been filled with family back when Luke’s father and his siblings had been alive. However, losing all four sons had taken a toll on Luke’s grandfather Chet Harmon. It had turned him into a cold and bitter man who clung too hard to what little family he had left. Unfortunately, his cast-iron determination to claim what was his didn’t work as well with people as it did with livestock. From what she knew, he’d managed to push away all the family he had left except for Caleb, the one grandchild who’d stuck by him. Abby wasn’t sure why.

She remembered Luke’s grandfather as an angry, resentful sort of man. Generous to the community at large but not to his family. She’d witnessed the fights and arguments between him and Luke’s mom.
