ELEVEN

Kinsley wished she hadn’t said those words. She’d only been teasing. She certainly wouldn’t have to be desperate to snuggle with Brett under any circumstances. Still, she felt a little awkward.

But she was cold, and they needed to stay warm. They both gathered needles and leaves, and for good measure, Brett positioned a log so they’d have something to lean against.

“Would you prefer I leave the log out and we can just lie here instead?”

“The log is good for now and we can watch the fire for a while.”

“I have a feeling we’re both going to fall asleep from sheer exhaustion.”

“You might be right.”

“And once I sit down, I don’t think I’m going to get back up soon.” He quirked a grin, but she saw the exhaustion on his face and in the set of his shoulders.

“Let’s leave the log.” It was better to ease into this situation. Lying down together felt too intimate. She crawled into the lean-to and sat on the soft ground, then leaned against the log. He followed her in and wrapped his arm around her for warmth. She snuggled against him and stared at the fire. Back when they were a couple, they’d never actually been camping. She hadn’t known he’d enjoyed hiking, even. Was that something new or had he always been more of an outdoorsman? She thought she’d known him—she’d loved him—but then again even when someone knew someone well, it could take a lifetime to learn everything. And she’d wanted that lifetime with him.

Back then.

She shouldn’t think about what they’d had together before because that did her no good now—but being here made it difficult not to wonder. He remained tender and caring and all-around good in every way and it baffled her that he wasn’t already married. Didn’t have a girlfriend.

Wait a minute. Maybe he did at least have a significant other, but she’d failed to ask and he’d failed to tell her. For that matter, maybe she hadn’t asked because she was afraid of the answer, which seemed crazy. But no way would she ask him now, while she was curled up in his arms. Besides, he wouldn’t have been staying on the beach alone if he was married.

Okay. Good. She could stop worrying. Smiling to herself, she relaxed into him. Warmth infused her. She could let herself fall asleep just like this. Unfortunately, that meant she might be getting entirely too comfortable against him.

Being with him felt far too good, and right.

This is completely surreal.

She couldn’t have imagined this moment in her wildest dreams. At least they weren’t snuggling out of affection for each other. Instead they were just trying to survive. How could her life have come to this moment where she was cuddling with the man she used to love—a man who’d broken her heart—in order to live through the night and not freeze to death?”

A log fell and startled her from her sleepy thoughts. “The fire’s going out. Will we be okay?”

“I’ll need to stoke it, but I won’t add more firewood.
