Chapter 13

“Hey, Krista, don’t you look nice today?” Wren greeted her from behind the receptionist’s desk at Fortress Advisers. “I wish I could wear orange. When I do, it gives my face an unnatural color.” She sighed.

“Thank you, but I’d gladly trade this sweater for your lovely red hair. My brown is basic,” Krista said, pointing to her hair. “Is Rica in her office?” Wren’s face fell at the question.

“Oh, no. She was going to call you, but she ran out in such a hurry she must have forgotten. I am so sorry. You came all the way here for nothing.”

“What happened?” Krista asked, not caring about her several block journey.

“There was a little accident at daycare, and she had to go get Charlie.”

“Is she okay?” Rica and Parker brought Charlie to her sister-in-law’s daycare. Susannah had been in the daycare business for almost fifteen years and had seen her fair share of bumps and scrapes. Her calling Rica was not a good sign.

“Rica said she’ll call in with an update when she has one. But she was hoping you could meet with Croix. He’ll do in a pinch.” Wren winked.

“Thanks for the ringing endorsement,” Croix said, walking toward them with two coffee mugs. He handed one to Krista, and she smiled politely. Meeting with Croix was the last thing she wanted to do. This meeting was for her to gather information in a neutral environment. She didn’t think Croix would be neutral about this, not with his black-or-white thinking. The only gray in Croix’s life was in his wardrobe.

She turned to Wren, a pleading expression on her face. “I’d really like to meet with Rica. Does she have any openings in the next few days?” Croix’s eyebrows shot up in surprise, but she ignored him.

“She does, but it depends on Charlie. Parker’s so busy with Handi Andi, he doesn’t know which way is up, so if Charlie’s sick or hurt, Rica won’t be in for a few days.” Krista let that sink in. If she were a single mom, this would happen to her, too. Could she drop everything to fetch a sick child? Most likely, yes, assuming she wasn’t at another Hart property. She’d need good, reliable backup, and a backup for her backup. She’d planned to ask Susannah, but who else?

“I’m not exactly chopped liver, you know? I can handle a simple budget review.” Croix sounded upset and insulted, a bad combination in any man.

It couldn’t hurt, could it? she wondered. The sooner she understood what her financial picture was, the better off she’d be. And if Eric ever called her with some housing options, she’d know what she could afford.

Croix wouldn’t like the path she was looking at, but ultimately it wasn’t his decision. Unless of course he saw how serious she was and changed his mind about having children and a future with her. She looked at him, considering her options. It would be easier to think if he didn’t look so handsome today.

“Why are you wearing a suit?” she asked.
