LIGHT, TEXTURE, and PATTERN ASSIGNMENTS
ASSIGNMENT TWO: THE WAY OF LIGHT
We are moving on to another key feature of the visual world: light.
The word photography means, “inscribing with light.” We see because of light. The eye developed as an organ that senses and works with light and space. Without light, we are in the dark. Some also call photography the art of light and shadow. Many of the skills in photography are techniques of managing light.
For contemplative photography, light is a major subject. We can use it to notice light through the day and the seasons. Light expresses tremendous ordinary magic. It highlights space and form; it invites tone and moods.
Some teachings in Nalanda Miksang were only hinted at in the Color as Color assignment. The light assignments explore these more deeply. In particular, the light assignments bridge levels one and two, rather than using level one only.
The heart of Nalanda Miksang manifests more at level two, and the light assignment opens the main practice of this path: the exploration of the phenomenal world in level two.
Starting with level one, first you will explore light abstractly, as a form. Then you will move to the expressive engagement of level two light.
