Downtown Long Beach was a quiet place in 1910. Only one automobile—probably still a rare sight in those days—can be seen. The main mode of transportation at that time would have been a horse and cart. The view in this photograph looks south along Jeff Davis Avenue. (Courtesy of Paul Jermyn.)

W.J. Quarles’ General Store operated from 1890 to 1925. It was located at the head of Jeff Davis Avenue on Railroad Street (now the location of Exclusive Cleaners). The post office was also located in the store until 1904. The store carried groceries, dry goods, notions, seeds, fertilizer, and farm implements. The Masonic Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star both met in a room upstairs during the 1890s. In this photograph, I.D. Toomer is seated on the left near the feed room. Clerks Oscar Quarles (left) and Owen Thomas Jr. are standing in the front. The store was later operated by J.J. Bailey. (Courtesy of the Mary Ellen Alexander Collection.)
