Chapter 12
When I arrived at the lake I didnât search the entire lake area by driving all around it. Instead, I found a suitable spot next to the lake and stopped there. It was a nice spot with trees and easy access to the lake. I had filled my truck three-quarters full with gas before arriving. I would have preferred to have it completely full but it was good enough to get away if I had to run from trouble.
It was a nice day so I unloaded the canoe. I put some tackle and the fishing rod in it and took off paddling to do a little fishing. It was so pleasant on the lake with no noise except the sound of birds and the gentle lapping of the water against the aluminum canoe. I caught and landed a three-pound pike so I quit fishing because it would supply me with more meat than I could probably eat.
I paddled around some more before going back to the camp. I had not seen anyone so far. Getting back, I cleaned the fish and ate it for supper. The next morning I took my light rifle and hiked about three miles from my camp and back again without seeing anyone. I saw pheasants and other critters. I shot a pheasant and that night I had pheasant for supper.
The area was so peaceful and wild food readily available, I camped there five more days. I figured this must have been similar to what vacations were like before the event.
I had at least one meal of fish every day. I even took a cold swim to get clean. It was a very pleasant stay and I was tempted to stay longer but morning came and I left that little slice of heaven I had found. I was now a long way from home and had that one bad day where I had to shoot someone. Since then Iâve had the best of luck. I wondered how long this streak of good luck would hold.
Almost to the Oklahoma border, I decided to stop and see exactly where I was. I thought I had a turn coming up and didnât want to miss it. The problem with these back roads is that there arenât many road signs. I stopped and shut the truck off and got out so I could get some sun. I opened the map on the hood of the truck.
I had just figured out where I was when I heard a shot ahead of me. I quickly folded the map and took out my heavy rifle. I locked the truck and went ahead on foot to see what was going on ahead of me.
Crouching in the shallow ditch, I was a little harder to spot because there wasnât much for cover in these parts because the land flat with very few trees. I stayed in the ditch and kept my eyes peeled ahead. I saw a stopped car and looked it over carefully with my powerful rifle scope.
