The Views

From the Galerie des Chimères (Chimera Gallery), named for Viollet-le-Duc’s mythical creatures and monsters, at the top of the western façade, you will find a spectacular panorama of the Parisian skyline, including the Latin Quarter’s ancient streets and the Eiffel Tower.

The Bells

The top of the western façade offers an impressive view of the South Tower’s 13-tonne bourdon bell, Emmanuel (all of the cathedral’s bells are named). During the night of 24 August 1944, when the Île de la Cité was retaken by French, Allied and Resistance troops, the tolling of the Emmanuel announced Paris’ approaching liberation. Emmanuel's peal purity comes from precious gems and jewels Parisian women threw into the pot when it was recast from copper and bronze in 1631. Admire its original siblings in Square Jean XXII. As part of the 2013 celebrations for Notre Dame's 850th anniversary since construction began, nine new bells were installed, replicating the original medieval chimes.
