1 Bermeo

map

This fishing port is refreshingly down to earth and hasn’t lost its soul to tourism. There’s much history hidden in its laneways, as some centuries ago Bermeo was a vibrant centre for the whaling industry. Scenic outlooks offer memorable views over the rugged seashore, although the only beaches in the area are rocky and wave-battered.

West of Bermeo, on the way to Bakio, is one of the most photographed features of the Basque coast: the small island of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (admission free). Attached to the mainland by a short causeway, this rocky isle is topped by a hermitage (h11am-6pm Tue-Sat, 11am-3pm Sun Jul & Aug). The island is named after St John the Baptist who, local tradition holds, visited the island. Game of Thrones fans will recognise the setting, which was featured in season seven.

Everyone’s favourite restaurant in Bermeo is humble-looking, family-run Artza (Askatasun Hiribidea 1; menú weekday/weekend €12/20; h1-4pm & 7-10.30pm) churning out mouth- watering plates of octopus, grilled tuna and skate. The marmitaco (a hearty fish soup) is outstanding. On busy summer days and on weekends you may have to queue.
