MILAN

02 / pop 1.3 million

Italy’s financial and fashion capital, Milan (Milano) is polluted, sophisticated and expensive. Its designer shops, vibrant cultural scene and wicked nightlife are the big draws but they don’t come cheap, making the city a challenge for budget travellers.

Originally founded by Celtic tribes in the 7th century BC, Milan was conquered by the Romans in 222 BC and developed into a major trading and transport centre. From the 13th century it flourished under the rule of two powerful families, the Visconti and the Sforza.
