When you register with Facebook, you are given various data input options, such as age, relationship status, location and gender. The latter, though, is no longer a binary option. Today, 71 gender options are available, as follows:

Users can also select the pronoun they’d like to be referred to publicly – male (he/his), female (she/her) or neutral (they/their). For a male or female with no conflict about how society labels their gender, this may seem unnecessary. But to the rest of the population, this may come as a welcome invitation to express the complexities that sometimes accompany having their gender pigeon-holed.

Facebook software engineer Brielle Harrison helped to implement the changes and is undergoing gender transformation herself from male to female. She told AFP: “There’s going to be a lot of people for whom this is going to mean nothing, but for the few it does impact, it means the world. All too often transgender people like myself and other gender nonconforming people, are given this binary option: Do you want to be male or female? What is your gender?“

The University of California think tank, The Williams Institute, estimates that 700,000 of the 326 million people in the US identify in some way as transgender, about 0.2 per cent, or 1 in every 500. Everyday activities for this minority can be quite different than for the other 99.8 per cent.

In August 2018, Lenore Herrem had boarded a WestJet flight from Calgary to Saskatoon, after some confusion at the check-in desk, where the ground staff became “upset and confused” over her ID. Ms Herrem’s gender presentation (how a person dresses, acts and behaves) is female, but the gender on her healthcare card was classified as male. The photo on her ID card also presented as male. Yahoo.com reported that Ms Herrem boarded the plane and was settled in her seat for about 10 minutes when both gate agents boarded the flight and once again demanded her ID.
