Bianca turned the corner and checked the numbers on the houses as she passed. Carina had offered to drive her to Margotâs, but when Bianca found out Margot lived only a few blocks away from their new home, she opted to walk instead.
She slowed as she approached the faded-yellow house with the big oak tree in the yard. She reached into the back pocket of her jeans, pulled out the flash drive Jay had given her, and swallowed hard. She didnât know if Margot would even talk to her, but she knew she had to at least try to set the record straight.
Mustering her courage, she crossed the lawn and climbed the two steps onto the front porch. Her heartbeat quickened, but she forced herself to raise her hand and knock. Words tumbled through her head, words she might say, how she would explain who she was if one of Margotâs parents answered the door.
Footsteps sounded inside, and Bianca braced. Then the door swung open, and she found herself face-to-face with Toddâs girlfriend.
Bianca tightened her grip on the flash drive in her hand. âWe havenât met. Iâm Bianca Channing.â
Margot crossed her arms and stared. âI know who you are.â
âNo, you only think you know who I am.â Bianca took a steadying breath and forced herself to continue. âI know you think Iâve been sneaking around with Todd. I want you to know that isnât true. Itâs never been true.â
She huffed out a breath. âWhy should I believe you?â
âBecause I donât have any reason to lie.â Bianca held up the flash drive in her hand. âAnd because I brought you this.â
âWhat is it?â
âItâs a video clip. Please watch it. If you do, youâll know whatâs really been going on.â
Margot stared at Bianca for several seconds. Then she reached out and took the offered flash drive.
âI promise you, I havenât done anything to hurt you.â Bianca took a step back. âI guess Iâll see you at school.â
A little wrinkle formed on Margotâs brow as though she were deep in thought. Then, without a word, she stepped back and closed the door between them.
