GETTING AROUND

It is not recommended to walk between the Mafra National Palace and the Tapada—it’s about 7 km (4.5 mi) each way; drive or take an Uber/taxi, which should cost around €15 one-way. The palace is located in the charming town center of Mafra.

Ericeira

On the coast, around 35 km (22 mi) north of Lisbon, the fishing village of Ericeira attracts surfers and big-name surfing competitions. The Save the Waves Coalition has even declared it a World Surfing Reserve, only the second in the world and the only one in Europe. Laid-back Ericeira is a little gem, not especially picturesque but with stunning ocean vistas and beautiful beaches. A jumble of whitewashed fishermen’s cottages piled atop high-backed cliffs that encircle the cove-like main beach and harbor, it is a place where you can walk around barefoot and carefree.

What Ericeira lacks in picturesqueness, it makes up for with vibrant nightlife and excellent seafood. Be sure to try the local specialty, the curiously named ouriço-do-mar (which literally translates as “sea hedgehog” but is better known as the sea urchin). Still not quite on the mass tourism radar, Ericeira has managed to strike the perfect balance between traditional and cool, which makes for a fun and heady combination that keeps visitors coming back.
