Chapter 10

Rico

THIRTY-TWO HOURS wasn’t long in the grand scheme of things, however when you were in the midst of a brand-new relationship, it felt like a lifetime. Waverly texted close to ten last night to inform us they’d identified Betsy’s body, meaning we had to wait until morning for the feds to finish their autopsy and the funeral home to meet us at the county morgue in order to retrieve her remains.

The drive back to Mountain Grove took about an hour longer than expected, thanks to an accident on the interstate, but it still left me time to surprise River.

I’d texted her this morning, as usual, though I purposefully left out when we would be leaving to come home. She was already overly stressed, what with Sophia’s second attempt at a first therapy session later in the afternoon, and it didn’t seem right to add anything more on to her shoulders. Although, I was rethinking the intelligence of that move as I walked down Main Street from the funeral home to her teashop. She’d, no doubt, be happy to see me, but my girl had an independent streak a mile wide, and I had yet learned the proper way to maneuver around it.

Peering through the window from the sidewalk, I watched River interact with some old geezer who was having a difficult time keeping his eyes off her tits. Not that I could blame him, they were spectacular. She smiled, handing him a Styrofoam cup while the new girl gave him his change, but her smile grew immensely as I strode through the glass door.

“You’re here.”

She rounded the corner of the counter, throwing herself into my outstretched arms. Finally, I felt whole again. Her feet left the ground as I stood to my full height, reminding me just how tiny she was in comparison.

“Missed you, Dolcezza.”

I set her back on her feet, only to capture her lips in a kiss not meant for public viewing, though it didn’t stop me from claiming my woman in front of whoever wanted to watch. The clearing of a throat, however, did make me consider taking her into the back for more privacy. Especially when it happened a second time.

“I’m going to assume you’re Rico, so I won’t call 9-1-1 to tell them my boss is being mauled by some six-foot-something Greek god.”

“Spanish-Italian, actually,” I corrected once I broke our kiss.

“Quin, I’d like you to meet Rico,” River interjected. “Rico, this is Quinlan James. My first employee.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Quin.”

“You too,” she replied.

I remember River saying she was over twenty-one, but I didn’t know much else about her. There would definitely be a background check performed as soon as I could get near my laptop. River would be pissed, but the old saying holds true. It’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission, so the only thing I could do was pray to all things holy she checked out.

“You could’ve told me earlier you were on your way home.”

“I wanted to surprise you.
