Because the first lighthouse was situated 500 feet too far from the point of the island it was intended to warn against, a new one was ordered. In 1851, construction began on the 24-foot-tall octagonal stone tower shown here at a location 87 yards closer to the island’s point. (USCG.)

A fixed sixth-order Fresnel lens was added in 1857. It eventually was changed to a beacon with a six-second white blinking light. Henry F. Low of Rockport was appointed the keeper on August 2, 1849. The longest-serving keeper was Nehemiah Knowlton, who lived at the lighthouse for 14 years between 1893 and 1912. (SBHS.)
