CHAPTER 12: EVERYONE GETS A MILL STONE
It had taken me time, but I had reluctantly come to the realization that Lena had grown into an attractive woman. And whether I liked it or not, men pay attention to attractive womenâso do other women, which is why most ads use female models.
While Lena was at the Central Intelligence Agencyâs âFarmâ for training, she had made the acquaintance of many of the other candidates. She kept the phone numbers for networking purposes. They had come in handy over the years.
In the case of the operation against Golden Chalice, her contact was a member of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He had been wounded in the Sandbox, and had joined a team of injured, wounded, and sick military veterans for a different type of deployment.
He had joined ICEâs investigative arm as analyst for cases of child exploitation. They trawled chat rooms; they took child porn from hard drives to ID the perp and build the case for an arrest.
It was a joint program between ICE and U.S. Special Operations Command to build the ranks of investigators to keep up with networks of pervertsâboth the ones supplying the images and the ones demanding them. Requests from law enforcement agencies to analyze images and videos in a year ran in the millions.
The program was called the Human Exploitation Rescue Operative Child-Rescue Corps.
H.E.R.O. for short.
Before you ask, yes, I am relatively certain they came up with the acronym first.
The H.E.R.O. program was simple. Veterans who could no longer be on the battlefield were taught computer forensics over an 11-week program, followed by a year-long internship in ICE field offices. Lenaâs friend was a Chris Clute, a U.S. Army Ranger injured in a helicopter crash. It gave Clute a sense of purpose. And who didnât want to hunt down pedophiles? They made such a satisfying sound when you bounced them off the pavement.
The hard part was being clinical about graphic, violent content against children in order for them to hunt down the perp, the victim, or the place.
In the case of Clute, when Lena told him about looking into Golden Chalice, and several of the names associated with them, he told her heâd dig down on it.
What Ranger Clute really did was have his entire office take a coffee break to dig down on it. It took them a whole fifteen minutes. All they needed to do was look at properties owned by employees of the studio, then research them via the interior photographs posted on a real estate website. Clute and his people matched the photographs to those posted online of several underage girls who had gone missing, and never found.
This led us to Douglaston.
Douglaston is a part of Queens north of my neighborhood. Itâs literally the next precinct north of mine, the 111th. Some people might also know it as Little Neck, as opposed to Great Neck, over in Nassau. For those people who could tolerate The Great Gatsby, they might recognize it more as the fictional Little Egg and Big Egg.
