What if we flip it round?

Is it possible?

It’s pyramid shaped for a reason!

With so much complexity and so much stress in life, why don’t we start by searching for what we enjoy and what allows us to be our best selves? If we can find that and then look for a way to make it provide the other needs, then we end up much happier to begin with.

“Are you really so lazy you are going to leave those words partially obscured?”

What if instead of trying to climb a pyramid that gets harder and harder as you go up, instead we just start at self-actualisation and wander along the new base until we find our other needs?

Rather than starting at the basics of food, water and clothing, instead we find happiness and fulfilment.

Then our mental health is already taken care of. We are already becoming our best self by focusing on things like morality, creativity and acceptance. We will start by building self-esteem and confidence in ourselves. People with the same morality and acceptance will naturally accept us to provide our sense of belonging and in that belonging there will be safety and everything else we need.

It’s certainly not easy to flip a pyramid, especially one that’s been covered in millennia of dust, but it’s got to be worth a try, right?

Start with some different questions about your work.

Which bits do you enjoy?

Do you actually enjoy any of them? Or do you enjoy the concept of them?

Are there skills and components to the job you wish you had?

Once you’ve broken it down once, do it again. Look inside each component to find that fundamental kernel of enjoyment. For me as an accountant, financial modelling was something I enjoyed a lot but I would say it’s the problem solving and the programming side of it that I enjoy the most. My enjoyment has nothing to do with building profit and loss accounts and deciding on appropriate inputs, it instead has everything to do with solving a puzzle and doing it through creating infallible logic.

“You’re such a geek it’s untrue.”

Taking the time to investigate your current position and what brings you real happiness will help you uncover what you should be looking for in the future if and when you do consider mixing things up.

GOOD

Figuring out what you actually like is a good start, but if you want to make a move, or change direction in your career, regardless of whether it is a big change or a small change, you’ll probably need to have some transferable skills to help you on your way.

You need to know what you are good at!

“Nothing!”

Starting from scratch isn’t out of the question, but then you will need to consider what can be achieved by starting again and in what time frame, which we’ll discuss soon.

This is about feedback and how others view your work and successes. It’s also about accepting that feedback and not just disagreeing with things you don’t like.

I have issues with my confidence. I have issues with my body image.
