CHAPTER 15

FALLOUT

The entire world darkens on our melancholy march back home from Alexandrous. For the first time since I arrived, rain falls on the city of Vigiliae. I can’t tell if this is a dynamic setting of some sort, or if the devs are having a laugh at us. Regardless, my little squad exchanges friend requests and head to our respective Guild Halls. Alistair tells us that he’ll message us all when it’s time to go for the next Raid. He also mentions something about EU having to work on their strategies before going forward with the next attempt. So, it may be a while until we’re out on the frontlines again.

Arriving at our own Guild Hall has a strange atmosphere. Taco seems to be keeping his distance, while the others are giddy over some secret they keep giggling to each other about. All I want to do is go to bed and sleep until this day is over, but it seems my friends have another idea. They lead me into the kitchen at first. There they have a special meal ready to celebrate our victory. Although now all it does is reinforce our defeat.

“Hey,” Knightrous toasts, “we made it really far in that one.”

“We lost,” I cut, my fingernails digging into the wooden table.

“But we did beat the first two encounters. That’s more than any of us have ever done before.”

“It’s more than we’ve ever tried before,” TB laughs as he joins in the toast, holding sparkling cider instead of champagne. His aversion to alcohol makes a lot more sense now that I know his age. To think, a kid has been in here all this time. “We have you to thank for that Prak.”

“Yep,” Taco drones, coldly. “You really led us on quite the journey,” his words almost spit through his teeth.

“Yeah,” Knightrous comments, ignoring her Guild Leader’s tone, “and we’ll be even stronger next time. Maybe we can even hold off the Dark Revenants ourselves.”

“Hopefully there won’t be any Dark Revenants next time,” I respond. “In fact. I should message Alistair. I have some ideas for how to mitigate their effect on our next attempt.”

“You looking to take the reins from Guardian, now?” Taco questions, slamming his palm into the table.

This loss must be taking its toll on him as well. So, I let the outburst pass and attempt the best response I can think to say, “I’m not looking to take anyone else’s spot as leader.”

“You sure about that?” He leans into me, which brings him almost face to face as our seats at the table are often next to each other, “Even Alistair had to tell you to back down.”

“He couldn’t speak,” I explain. “Someone had to start making decisions, or our tower would have been lost like the others.”

TB slams his drink on the table, more to catch our attention than in the same frustration as Taco or me. “Come on!” he pleads. “We’re supposed to be celebrating. Here, let’s go show our newbie his big surprise.
