Night moved in without a sound. It made her skin crawl. Even the tetchfly that had been inadvertently sentenced along with her had fallen silent. Perhaps it had become a victim to the heat, or was simply following a Circadian-type impulse to rest when the greater of Leto’s suns went down. Either way, she watched Aeos sink lower until it was swallowed by night, the silence from her trace deafening.

She hummed some old songs from the Nets to pass the time. Her raspy voice creeped her out, though, especially as James’ body began to deteriorate and emit decay smells and gas. She had to focus on something else.

Birdy dug through her database. She wasn’t a music-saving kind of girl—she wanted to keep her space open for field notes and downloading articles she found. But she had saved a few songs. The one she played now was “Lonely,” by General Reep, and it became the soundtrack of her capture—a melodic, moving, and surprisingly hopeful balled that Cy had sung to her more than once. If they ever got married, she had hoped it would be the song that they danced to for the first time.
